New On-Disk Structure.Traditionally, every major release of IB unveils a new ODS and IB5 followed the rule. An ODS number is the way to denote the version of the internal structure that exists inside each GDB file that represents a database or one of the files that make up the complete database. The ODS for IB5.0 was upgraded to version 9.0, in order to support cascading referential integrity, index garbage and SQL roles. The Operations Guide provided information on migrating from earlier releases. IB5 is able to read IB4.0 databases (ODS 8.0) and IB4.2 database (ODS4.2). However, when IB5 touches an ODS 8 database, it upgrades the ODS automatically to 8.2, making it unavailable to versions of IB lower than IB4.2. If the database is created on IB5 or migrated by a backup and restore process, it becomes an ODS 9 database.
