The v3 bridge.

Every major IB version implements a new ODS to cater for new capabilities. IB4 with its ODS8 couldn't read directly databases created with IB3.X releases. Since IB was traditionally compatible with earlier versions, an artifact was developed, known as the bridge. It's no more than a way to identify IB3.3 databases (ODS 7) and pass the control to the IB3 code embedded in IB4, through the mechanism known as the Y-valve. From the documentation, it's not clear if you could read IB3.0's ODS and IB2.X's ODS with IB4.

Usually newer engine versions make minor upgrades to the ODS of older database versions, but I don't have information about IB4 v/s ODS<8 databases.
